Religious Studies

Intent:

'Never be angry with your neighbour because his religious views differ from your own; for all the branches of a tree do not lean the same way'

WILLIAM SCOTT DOWNEY

The Religious Studies department has a clear ethos and intent to:

  • build on prior learning in key stages 1 and 2 in order to develop a life-long enthusiasm for learning about religion
  • develop a passion for learning about the 6 main World religions to help students compare, contrast and reflect on their own reflections of society and worship.
  • teach a full GCSE course for those who choose the AQA RS Option (currently a Year 11 cohort)
  • encourage all students to consider further study of Religious Studies and entry to related careers post-16 and beyond
  • develop students’ interest of the impact of Religious expression in the wider world through activities such as visits from external organisations, visits to places of worship and house based whole school competitions.
  • provide weekly  tutor time slots on a Wednesday to KS4 students who have not taken the RS GCSE Option
  • host and organise drop down Religious Studies workshops discovering and discussing cultural and religious expression topics

The curriculum is sequenced to ensure that topics are delivered in a logical way in order to develop and link students’ knowledge and skills via weekly interleaving tasks.

Topics chosen link with Religious Calendar events as well as teacher planning consistency linked to all Year 7 and 8 being taught the same religion at the same time. This will aid combined assemblies and presentations/ visits.

The curriculum is also being developed to ensure early introduction on knowledge and skills relevant to GCSE RS, for example, Christian and Sikhism beliefs. Assessments include Key Higher level command task extended writing challenges. E.g. To assess and evaluate a statement with context similar to GCSE level.

In Year 9 students study a GCSE Transition course which covers the detail of the themes studied in the AQA GCSE Paper 3.  This both serves to complete the National Curriculum breath of coverage for RS as well as the opportunity to develop prior GCSE knowledge and understanding.

Themes covered are sensitive and provide opportunities for empathy and reflection linked to PDC lessons and British values.
